Thomas Moynihan

Historian of Ideas, University of Cambridge, UK

Thomas Moynihan is a writer and historian of ideas. He is a research affiliate at the University of Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, as well as an affiliate researcher at the Berggruen Institute’s Antikythera thinktank. His most recent book is X-Risk: How Humanity Discovered Its Own Extinction (MIT Press, 2020). He studies how cumulating insights about the external universe have, again and again, reorganised our sense of the biggest picture priorities, potentials, and perils facing our species. Amongst other projects, Thomas is currently working on a book exploring how science discovered the deep future and proved that the present moment might be able to dictate its entire course. He has written for the BBC, the New Scientist, the Guardian, Big Think, and Noema Magazine, amonst many others.
